About 200 water customers lost service near the southern end of Nearwater Lane at about 2 p.m. today, according to a spokesman for Aquarion Water Co.
An 8-inch water main broke at about 2 p.m. on Nearwater Lane at its intersection with Shipway Road, said the company spokesman, Bruce Silverstone.
Water service should be restored sometime between 6 and 8 p.m., he said. Customers from 38 Nearwater Lane, near the intersection with Woodland Drive south to Pratt Island are affected (see the map attached to this article).
Residents were informed about the water break and estimated time of repair through the "Code Red" telephone calling system, Silverstone said.
Gloria Smith of Plymouth Road said that when she turned her faucet knob, "it was only coming out half the normal force." She didn't get a phone call about the problem, although she did get an email, she said.
Smith looked on as a repair crew from Aquarion and A.J. Penna & Son dug down to the water main. She took a picture to send to some people she'd previously invited over for dinner.
