Week in Review

A recap of the week's headlines, June 7-13.

The school year may be winding down, but Darienites are still notching awards, winning championships, and busying themselves with the shape of things to come.

The long-planned Weed Beach redevelopment got a shot in the arm this week with the release of , but hurdles still remain for the renewal of the project itself. A couple miles to the north, the Noroton Heights commercial district took a step toward a likely overhaul as developer and property owner Tom Golden pitched a mixed-use rezoning plan for the site. (N.B.: the proposal comes up for a public hearing this Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in the Town Hall auditorium.)

In the next building over, Darien Public Schools recognized eight local students with Superintendent's Citizenship Awards, while the YWCA Darien/Norwalk honored six "women of distinction" at the Country Club of Darien. One of those women, Marcia Meinerth, was noted for being a member of the Darien Beautification Commission, whose floral feats we happened to profile this week.

Speaking of flowers, if you missed the 52nd annual Darien Arts Show and Sale, fear not: Patch captured over 40 of the works for your viewing pleasure. More of an audiophile, you say? We also sat down with Darien High School junior and award-winning composer Zach Heyde, whose nationally recognized composition "Finale"can be heard here

The Fire Marshal reported a quiet first week of June, while the Darien Police Department tallied up its arrests after last weekend's DUI checkpoint—four on site and two elsewhere—and took stock of the damage caused to a cruiser by a petrifying I-95 accident involving a man claiming to be Jesus.

And in case the Stanley Cup, NBA finals, and World Cup weren't enough to keep you sated, the Blue Wave had quite a week in the world of sport. The big news: after downing New Canaan in a heart-pounding, double-overtime semifinal—just watch that video!—the boys lacrosse squad nabbed its sixth consecutive state title this weekend by routing New Fairfield, 17-5. Must be something in the water around the FCIAC.

Not as lucky: the girls lacrosse team. After coming within inches of another championship berth thanks to a knockout of top-seeded Newtown, they were stymied by Greenwich, 11-9, in the semis. Ditto the boys volleyball team, whose hopes of playing in the title game were dashed by Masuk in three straight games.

Did we mention there's a new family of ospreys in town (and a fresh face at Darien Patch)?
