Week in Review

A recap of the week's headlines, June 14-20.

Happy Father's Day! Monday marks both the summer solstice and graduation ceremonies over at Darien High School, which means it's the unambiguous start of summer in town. But before you hop on that plane or bolt to the beach, make sure you didn't miss anything from the past seven days!

The week kicked off at Darien VFW Post #6933 with a Flag Day ceremony attended by Rep. Jim Himes. That spirit of civic engagement was seen again Friday during a blood drive honoring a fallen Darien Police officer and in an appeal from the Connecticut Food Bank this weekend for donations.

Over at Town Hall, development issues continued to lead the headlines. The Board of Selectmen bounced a proposal to abandon Allen O'Neill drive to the Planning and Zoning Commission, a date was fixed for a hearing on the town's 8-30g (affordable housing) moratorium application, and a representative for developer Tom Golden sought to fend off flooding concerns during a rezoning pitch for the Noroton Heights commercial district.

In the world of emergency responders, police divulged the arrest of a man on marijuana and prescription drug charges from the week prior and ratcheted up the yuck factor with a report of a van defaced with dog droppings. Firefighters reported a spate of apparent gas odors and motor vehicle accidents, but no major conflagrations.

And the DHS spring season may have drawn to a close, but that didn't stop athletic news from trickling out. Longtime girls volleyball coach Laurie LaRusso was named National High School Coach of the Year in her sport, and girls lacrosse midfielder Cali Ceglarski was named to the Connecticut Girls High School All-American Lacrosse Team. Volleyball standout Colby Billhardt told Patch about the unusual honor of being an in-state UConn recruit, while the Darien football team tied itself 7-7. (No, that's not a typo.)
