Week in Review

A recap of the week's headlines, June 21-27.

Things may be settling into a relative summer lull around town, but there's still plenty of note and interest in this edition of Week in Review.

The week began with a bang, as nearly 300 Darien High School seniors robed in blue and white participated in graduation ceremonies Monday on the stadium field. The air was muggy, but the sun stayed out along with hundreds of family and friends looking on. The finishing touch on the occasion: the age-old cap toss.

Police announced the arrest of a magazine salesman with a lengthy criminal record on charges of illegal solicitation, stemming from aggressive door-to-door pitch he allegedly made without a permit June 18. Meanwhile, investigators continue to pursue leads in the disappearance of over $2000 from a Stop & Shop safe earlier this month. Firefighters reported having responded to the scene of a June 16 kitchen fire, which—thankfully—the owner was able to extinguish before they arrived.

Over at 2 Renshaw, Darien Finance Director Kathleen Clarke Buch was appointed to a statewide board that works with Connecticut municipalities judged to be in poor fiscal shape. Darien Public Schools reported in donations over the past year, while a plan to put solar panels on the roof of DHS and Ox Ridge Elementary School inched forward. And starting on Thursday, a somewhat less routine sight appeared on the front lawn of Town Hall: members of local parishes reading the Bible aloud from start to finish (a Herculean task involving some 300 lectors over 70-plus hours).

Two exciting news items popped up this week for those looking for summer entertainment in Darien: Harper's finally opened, and the Darien Summer Nights Concert Series kicks off soon.

And though the spring season may over at DHS, Darien's competitive spirit hasn't gone on vacation. After a storm-related state of emergency in Bridgeport forced a postponement earlier in the week, Darien notched two wins Saturday in American Legion competition. Undeterred by the warm weather, the Darien Ice Club took to the rink for its fifth annual Charity Skate to benefit Person-to-Person last weekend.
