Week in Review

A summary of the week's events, July 6-11.

By any measure, it was a tumultuous week in Darien.

To start with, details are still unfolding from Sunday morning's fatal accident on Hollow Tree Ridge Road. Police are waiting to release the name of the victim pending notification of additional family members, but the driver was said to be a female resident of Darien.

Earlier in the week, the story was the heat. Record (or near-record) temperatures contributed to multiple power failures across Darien, while Aquarion asked customers to alternate days on which they water lawns and gardens in order to minimize strain on the company's system. One final blackout slipped in late Saturday, though it was not known if weather played a role.

Richard Benevides, a Bridgeport man who worked as a mechanic at H & L Chevrolet, reportedly disappeared with a customer's SUV for a full day until returning the vehicle and handing himself over to Darien Police. Meanwhile, two men pled guilty to a 2009 string of bank robberies that struck Darien, police reported the arrest of a Norwalk man on drug and DUI charges, and a Darien woman was said to be out $4400 after being caught up in a "secret shopper" money order scam.

Not enough news for you? How about the town finally submitting its 8-30g moratorium application to the state, Metro-North service being shut down for over 8 hours on the New Haven line, or a fire alarm being tripped by a generator at the Diagnostic Imaging Center of Darien?

The week did not lack for sports action, either. Darien Senior American Legion eked out a win against previously undefeated Greenwich—putting them six wins from a tournament berth—but later fell to the squad in a second match-up. Darien National remained unbeaten through Friday in District One Little League tournament play.

And if the heat kicks up again, there's always ice cream!
