Week in Review

A summary of the week's events, July 12-18.

It was another busy news cycle in Darien, particularly for law enforcement and first responders.

Whitney Smith, 30, was identified as the victim of last weekend's fatal crash on Hollow Tree Ridge Road, as investigators continued to search for clues to the cause of the accident. Funeral services for Smith will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on July 23 at 11:00 AM.

Joshua Green, 25, of Darien was arrested on charges stemming from a 2004 incident in which he allegedly fled the state and engaged in sexual relations with a 14-year-old Darien girl. The FBI captured a man believed to have robbed a Darien bank (and 10 others) just days after the bureau announced it was searching for the so-called "Burly Bandit." A bit closer to home, Darien Police reported the arrest of (another) man attempting to steal dental products from the CVS on Post Road, while the Noroton Heights Fire Department was forced to evacuate the Stop & Shop and Walgreen's off Heights Road after a worker passed out due to carbon monoxide inhalation.

Over in the world of development and real estate, the Chris and Margaret Stefanoni issued a second rebuttal to the town's case for a four-year moratorium on 8-30g affordable housing appeals, while developer Tom Golden's proposed rezoning plan for the Noroton Heights commercial district met stiff resistance from neighboring residents at a public hearing. Meanwhile, the $10 million sale of 141 Long Neck Point Road led this week's list of property transactions.

Did we mention it's been a tough stretch for servicer providers (to say nothing of their customers)? After a round of disruptions for CL&P subscribers during last week's heat wave, Aquarion Water Company issued not one, but two extensions to its voluntary conservation measures this week, citing dry weather. And Optimum Online customers who rely on the company's email system found themselves in the proverbial dark Thursday and Friday, as the ISP's servers experienced a prolonged outage.

Darien Junior Legion clinched a spot in the state tournament despite losing to Ridgefield early this week, while Senior Legion was mathematically eliminated from postseason contention after a 2-1 loss to Wilton. Ditto for Darien National, which made the first cut of the District One tournament but . The good news: the Darien girls softball team (9-10 years old) won the District I championship!

In case you missed it: Person-to-Person, the second annual Big Assist fundraiser drew an impressive lineup of hockey stars, and Darien's Sidewalk Sale and Family Fun Days wound down another bustling week for the town.
