Week in Review

Wondering what happened in Darien, Sept. 21—27?

The weather could not seem to make up its mind, but public officials made a lot of important decisions this week. Here’s a recap of the week’s top stories:

Monday:
We brought you video of Sunday’s 30th Darien Road Race, and photographs from the the weekend’s dedication ceremony of the Scofield Barn and the Democratic and Republican campaign kick-offs. Despite one arrest, the police blotter includes a number of motor vehicle and home burglaries. Darien’s varsity boys soccer played a solid game on Monday afternoon, but got wrecked 5—0 by last year’s FCIAC champs Staples. Monday evening, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved an amendment to parking regulation for the creation of incentive parking at Darien rail stations; and Town Counsel Wayne Fox helped clear the air and set the facts straight over the Option to Lease at 35 Leroy Avenue.

Tuesday:
There are plans for a new Allen O’Neill Drive, but the neighborhood’s has a long, interesting history dating back to 1864, when it was the first hospital and home in the nation for disabled Civil War veterans and their orphans. At Tuesday evening’s Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Donald Fiftal and Director of Health David Knauf discussed Town use of school facilities in emergency situations, including a mass inoculation clinic. Also at town hall, the Darien Junior Football League presented their proposal for practice lights at Holahan Field to the Planning and Zoning Commission held at a public hearing.

Wednesday:
Wednesday was a frugal day. We went to the Darien Farmers Market to see if we could whip up a delicious, organic family meal for under $30; and Darien Patch contributor Jim Cameron found a cheaper way to a commute.

Thursday:
Darien schoolchildren are no longer allowed to travel to after school playdates via school bus. Yes it’s true. Kathryn Higgins shared her thoughts. In an historic move, state Senate voted for a sweeping redistricting of the probate system, affirming local officials' compromise of a consolidated Darien-New Canaan court. Back at Town Hall, Darien was officially designated a HeartSafe Community.

Friday:
Flu prevention starts now. Darien Health Department, Nursing & Home Care of Wilton, and Stamford Hospital will hold a number of seasonal flu clinics in Darien, starting in October. Middle School is full of challenges—for the parents. And Open House is the challenge of the year. Kathryn Higgins brought us that story.

Weekend:
Chivalry is alive and well at the Darien Arts Center in a swashbuckling revival of Man of La Mancha, which opened Friday night. Darien dancer-turned-artist Cate Leach puts music to canvas in her show, Selected Works: Paintings and Mixed Media, at the Mayor’s Gallery in Stamford. Thanks to Darien-based lollipop company, Suckerborne, that lemon vodka martini or dark and stormy won’t have to wait ‘til cocktail hour. Blue Wave Football rebounded from an opening game shutout loss, with a 31—0 whitewash of Danbury, Saturday. Also on Saturday, The 5th Annual ITPMAN Triathlon took to the streets (and to the Sound!), and we were there taking photographs. Watch this space …
