Week in Review

A recap of Darien's top stories for the week of Nov. 2—8.

It was a week of wins in Darien, starting with a Republican rout on Election Day and ending with a back to back to back, triple FCIAC championship win for the Blue Wave girls. Here’s a recap of the week’s top stories:

Monday, Nov. 2

News of First Selectman Dave Campbell’s indirect involvement with the Rings End Lumber lawsuit followed that of Selectman candidate Jerry Nielsen’s assessment appeals. Only one car burglary on Halloween week’s police blotter, and All Hallows Even saw a string of mailbox vandalism reports. At the evening’s teary eyed Board of Selectmen meeting, the last of the current board, First Selectman Evonne Klein appointed Linda Santarella to the Police Commission. Selectman Callie Sullivan presented Klein with an apropos parting gift: , an illustrated history.

Tuesday, Nov. 3

Election Day, and the polls opened at 6 a.m. Volunteers saw a steady stream of voters, a slight increase since the 2007 municipal election. Supporters headed to their respective parties’ Campaign Headquarters in downtown Darien to await the results. By about 8:15 p.m. the results were in: Darien elected Dave Campbell as First Selectman of Darien. Republicans won in a landslide, though Sullivan and David Bayne received enough votes to win seats on the Board of Selectmen. Petitioning candidate Chris Noe won 58 votes. In other non-election news, the Darien High School's varsity field hockey defeated Wilton 3—0, and advanced to the FCIAC finals.

Wednesday, Nov. 4

Wednesday morning we brought you dozens of photos and exclusive video coverage from Election day and night. We heard from Health Director David Knauf that success of Tuesday’s Vax & Vote clinic put pressure on flu vaccine ability. At noon, the "We Are United" team, along with Board of Education member Amy Bell took the oath of office.

Thursday, Nov. 5

A second swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday afternoon, where all but a few of Darien's re-elected officials took the oath. As the dust began to settle on Election Day, we headed to the Darien Library for a good book and a few good DVDs. On Thursday evening, our Blue Wave field hockey team rolled over the Rams 3—0, clinching the FCIAC title.

Friday, Nov. 6

In the morning we met with the Darienites behind the Stamford Hospital’s sold out Dream Ball, and in the evening it was off to the newly renovated Fuji of Japan for dinner and a show.

Saturday Nov. 7 & Sunday, Nov. 8

A car was stolen and several were burglarized during the overnight hours of Saturday, Nov. 7. At 11 a.m. Selectman David Bayne (D) and Selectman Callie Sullivan (D) were sworn in to office at a small ceremony at Tilly Pond Park. Saturday was a big day for the Blue Wave. The football team washed over Westhill 37—0; they'll need wins in their final two games to have a shot at the post-season. Making waves in the pool, Darien’s swimming and diving team won the FCIAC championship for the first time in history; and on the volleyball court, the undefeated varsity won their ninth consecutive FCIAC championship over a good Greenwich team at Ludlowe.
