The Darien Old Timers Athletic Association will hold its 52nd Annual Sports Award Dinner on Monday, November 11th 2013, at The Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s. The purpose of this very popular dinner is to recognize the accomplishments of Darien athletes and coaches, to meet with old friends, to reminisce about days gone by and to recognize those who support the opportunity for athletics to be part of the educational and growing experience in Darien.  The Honorees this year include Dr. Andre Buchs, Patrick Williams, Joe Lopiano, Paul Hendrickson, Coach Isidore Battino, Kathy Bounty Gouin, Edward Tunick and Lauren Lindsay.

Dr. Andre Buchs, class of 1957, was a First Team All State Football Tackle on the Darien High School undefeated State Division Championship football team in 1956.  Dr. Buchs also played hockey and held the school record for the shot put in track.  Patrick Williams, class of 1957, played varsity ice hockey, baseball, and tennis for Darien High School and tennis at Duke University.  Patrick went on to an extraordinary musical career, highlighted by numerous prestigious awards, such as 4 Emmy Awards and 2 Grammy Awards.  Joe Lopiano, class of 1963, was an outstanding baseball and basketball player and team captain. Joe was an exceptional pitcher, helping the Darien Little League and Babe Ruth League All-Star Teams go to represent Darien in the World Series’ in 1958 and 1961.  Paul Hendrickson, class of 1969, was an outstanding track star during his four years at DHS, was team captain and earned Most Valuable Athlete as well as All FCIAC Honors and State recognition.  



Male Achievement Honoree Isidore Battino coached the boy’s gymnastic team to 10 CT State Championships in his 17 years at DHS.   Coach Battino is most remembered for teaching thousands of Darien Students the “Battino Roll”!  Female Achievement Honoree Kathy Bounty Gouin played varsity field hockey, basketball, and track at Darien High School, helping to win the FCIAC and State Field Hockey Championships in 1981, and the FCIAC Championships in track in 1981 and 1982, and later went on to excel in college and amateur lacrosse leagues.  This year’s Civic Honoree, Edward Tunick, is nominated for his long standing and outstanding support of scholarships for Darien High School, especially the Edward Tunick Business Scholarship for a graduating senior.  Our James Carlson Award Honoree Lauren Lindsay is a well decorated Special Olympian who has distinguished herself in sailing as well as representing the United States in cross-country skiing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games.



John Maher Jr. and Ed Maher will be presenting a special tribute video of their father the late DHS “Coach” John Maher Sr., a moment not to be missed.  Additionally we will give Special Recognition to Darien High School’s 1963 Connecticut State Championship Football Team on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their notable triumph.
