GEG Summer Science "STEM" Fun Camp for Junior Scientists

A Summer Science “STEM” Fun Camp for Junior Scientists

Calling all junior scientists to explore, discover and imagine the world of science at Greenwich Education Group's Science "STEM" Fun Camp in July!  This week-long science enrichment workshop for rising 6th -9th graders will allow students to experience a bird's-eye view of science and its overarching role in their daily lives through scientific method and experimental design. Students will learn and practice safe laboratory skills by completing numerous hands-on experiments involving a variety of techniques.  Each day will feature a different science theme: “the Importance of PH; DNA and Proteins; Engineering; Forensic Science; Physics: Electricity and Circuits.  In addition, students will learn the relevance of scientific concepts to current events through daily discussions and lively debates while reinforcing the importance of being informed citizens and decision-makers when technological changes arise in their communities.

“The science enrichment workshop is designed to give students an early introduction to the exciting world of STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math with the goal of inspiring them to consider college majors and careers in these areas,” explains Teri Gaberman, GEG Academic Services Director.  “I believe its an important and unique workshop for students, not only does this fun, hands-on experience engage, introduce and inspire them to have a lifelong passion of discovery and innovation, but it also allows them to see opportunities that they might not have otherwise considered.”   The workshop instructor, Furahi Achebe holds a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Cornell University and is a chemist with 23 years of industrial research experience.  She is co-inventor on five patents or patent applications and recently has won an award for innovation.  Achebe has volunteered in schools and created and implemented science literacy programs for after school and community events for over 20 years. She publishes a free online-magazine for teens found at www.thefitting room.tv.
