What's Open, What's Closed Around New Year's Day

Here's what's open and what's closed, what closes early on Wednesday and what bus or train schedules are the same or different on various days.

Darien Public Schools are recessed until Thursday, Jan. 2, when classes resume.

Tuesday: New Year's Eve


  • Darien Town Hall closes at 3 p.m.
  • Darien YMCA closes at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and is closed on Wednesday.
  • Darien Public Schools are recessed until Thursday, Jan. 2, when classes resume.
  • The YWCA of Darien-Norwalk is closed until it reopens Thursday, Jan. 2.
  • The Darien Community Association is closed until it reopens Thursday, Jan. 2.

METRO-NORTH


From the Metro-North website:

"On New Year’s Eve Day (Tuesday, December 31, 2013), we will operate a reduced weekday AM Peak schedule, an early afternoon getaway schedule and reduced PM Peak service. See our special Holiday Timetable for details, or visit our schedules page.

"Our New Year’s Eve schedule will include extra late afternoon and early evening inbound service, as well as overnight New Year’s morning service. See our special Holiday Timetable for details, or visit our schedules page.

"As in past years, those of you traveling home “early morning” (after midnight) on New Year’s Eve need to have your train tickets in advance. Tickets will be collected prior to boarding trains at Grand Central. As in prior years, alcoholic beverages will not be allowed on Metro-North trains and platforms and at stations from 12 Noon on New Year’s Eve (Tuesday, December 31, 2013) through 12 noon on New Year’s Day (Wednesday, January 1, 2014).
The MTA Police will enforce this restriction."

New Year's Day (Wednesday)

METRO-NORTH: For those returning from Times Square (or elsewhere in New York City), see the Metro-North subsection under Tuesday or at the bottom of this article.

Metro-North will operate on an hourly schedule for the rest of the day. Visit their schedules page for train times.

CLOSED

  • All schools, public and private (Darien Public Schools are recessed until Thursday, Jan. 2, when classes resume.)
  • Libraries -- all of them
  • Banks have the option of staying open or closed in Connecticut — in practice, all or nearly all are closed (and this is one of the seven holidays this year that even TD Bank is closed)
  • The YWCA of Darien-Norwalk is closed until it reopens Thursday, Jan. 2.

OPEN

  • Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk is open.


Thursday

If it was closed, expect it to be open Thursday and Friday (call or visit an organization's website if you're not sure).

Darien Public Schools, Darien Library, the Darien YMCA and the Darien Community Association are among the local institutions open this day.

Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicle offices open at 9:15 a.m.

Metro-North
