(Bridgeport- June 10, 2014) “Girls on the Run” is a life skills based program that encourages young girls to stay healthy and active via running and also works to build their self-esteem. For 12 weeks, a group of 5th and 6th grade girls at New Beginnings Family Academy, a 400-student charter school in Bridgeport, have been participating in this program and on June 21st will participate in a 5k running event that is part of Fairfield Road Races sponsored by Stratton-Faxon.

The Girls on the Run program was piloted in 1996, and in 2000 Girls on the Run was founded. Since then, the program has enriched the lives of over 72,000 girls. With a motto like “learn, dream, live, run” girls are taught that they have control of their lives and it is their job to maximize their full potential. Twice a week at 4pm Eva, Jada, Cindy, Sylvia, Julia, Tatiana, D’Asia, Mia, S’nyh, Tyrianna, Azariaha, Brianna, NyAsia, Amari, and TyAsia meet with their 4 coaches. The program is operated out of  the New Canaan YMCA and coaches do not only teach the girls running drills that will help train them for the running event (coaches also donated sneakers to the girls), but they also teach team building skills and work on building self-esteem.

The event will start on Fairfield Beach Rd and end at Jennings Beach in Fairfield. As a school community we support the girls and look forward to seeing what the girls have learned in their sessions.
