100K Jewelry Theft Reported on West Avenue

It was an unlucky Friday the 15th for one Darien family on West Avenue.

On the morning of Friday, Nov. 15, a man came to the door of a West Avenue home asking if he could use the bathroom, residents told Darien police.

The man was let in, because he appeared to be nice looking, a resident told police. Later that day the home was burglarized: $100,000 in jewelry was taken, along with $2,000 in cash and 100 silver coins valued at $10 apiece.

The house was locked between 11:45 a.m., when all family members had left, and 9:45 p.m., when they returned.

A screen window in the bathroom the man had used was found up, although the family normally keeps it shut, and the window was unlatched, although it's normally latched. The back door was ajar.

The family found closet doors had been opened in a daughter's bedroom, drawers were pulled out of dressers in the master bedroom, with clothing and jewelry boxes strewn on the floor and on the bed.

In the previous few days, workers were at the house, the homeowner told police.
