Accused of Pilfering, Captured Under Train Station Platform

A cashier at Stop & Shop in Goodwives Shopping Center bolted last Monday after he was accused of pilfering, and he ran underneath a platform at the Darien Metro-North station, where he was arrested, police said.

Darien police officers chased Joseph Wilson, 24, across the train tracks at Darien Metro-North Railroad Station late afternoon last Monday before finding him hiding under a platform, where he was arrested on a larceny charge, police said.

Police gave this account of the incident leading up to the chase and his arrest:

Wilson, a Norwalk resident, worked at Stop & Shop supermarket in the Goodwives River Shopping Center, 25 Old Kings Hwy. N., where a store detective was questioning him about thefts of money from the store.

The detective had been investigating thefts at the store, and Wilson was suspected of repeatedly scanning bottle-return slips and then removing the cash from the cash drawer.

That day, store officials saw video from a store surveillance camera which recorded Wilson stealing $20 with the slips, they told police. Store officials suspected Wilson of engaging in this theft since March 2012 but didn't know how much was taken.

At one point when the store detective was interviewing Wilson in an office, the detective opened the office door for the manager, and Wilson bolted out of the room, then  out of the store. Police were called at 5:20 p.m. and pursued Wilson as he ran across the railroad tracks before taking him into custody.

Police charged Wilson, of Ward Street in Norwalk, with sixth-degree larceny,  interfering with an officer, and simple trespass. Police also determined that Wilson was the subject of two warrants for failure to appear in court, so he was also charged with those crimes.

Wilson's bond was set at $500, which he did not post before appearing the next day in state Superior Court in Stamford.
