Air Ducts Cleaned out — and Sisters' Bedrooms Cleaned out of their Money

Spring cleaning of a different sort.

Money was found missing from in the bedrooms of two sisters after workers did some air-duct cleaning on Wednesday, May 14, at a Hoyt Avenue house.

(In the description of the case at a police briefing, a police spokesman made no accusations against the air-duct cleaners.)

In the bedroom of the older sister, 27, a small pink money box had been seen secured and closed by the woman's mother three separate times earlier in the day, the mother told police. But it was found wide open with two $100 bills missing.

In a separate room, a 14-year-old girl was missing $45, which had been in a purse on a window sill.

Both rooms were adjacent to where the attic stairs pulled down, and which workers had to use to get up to the attic for the duct cleaning.

The workers had arrived at 1:30 p.m. that day and left by 3:12 p.m. (the police report didn't indicate why that second time was so exact, according to a police spokesman). While the air-duct cleaning took place, some family members were at home, but they were outside.

Darien police detectives are continuing to investigate the matter.
