Board Appropriates $30K for Police Video-Training Equipment

Appropriation of funds now lies in hands of the Board of Finance.

If the Board of Finance so approves, the Darien Police will purchase $30,000 worth of video production equipment to enhance the department's in-house training program.

The department recently received a $30,000 state grant from the Office of Policy and Management. According to Chief Duane Lovello, the "highest and best use" of those funds is the purchase of video equipment that will allow his department to produce training videos. As it stands, officers are paid overtime to lead requisite department-wide training sessions. Chief Lovello said the new production equipment, which includes a teleprompter, will afford the DPD some flexibility.

"As opposed to having officers come in, just plug it in at 2 a.m. when there's downtime," he said.

OPM will reimburse the $30,000 appropriation in full upon site visit once the equipment has been installed.

Board of Finance members in the audience, including Chairman Murry Steglemann, expressed concern with regards to prospective training and installation costs.

"Will you come to us asking for more money?" said Steglemann.

Chief Lovello said he does not anticipate any future costs and and that the $30,000 is "all-inclusive."
