Call to Darien Man for Ransom Revealed as a Scam

No ransom victim, no ransom paid.

The man on the other end of the phone made a dire threat: A Darien man's brother was being held for ransom after an automobile accident with a dangerous man.

The Darien man informed the caller on Sunday, just before 3:50 p.m., that, in fact, he didn't have a brother.

Well, the caller replied, it was his son that was being held for ransom. In fact, the son was bound and gagged. Two thousand dollars was demanded. The man wanted it wired to him. It would pay for damages to the caller's vehicle.

The Darien man, a 78-year-old resident of Watchtower Road, called police at 3:50 p.m. to report the threat. Although a police report didn't say so, it seems the man called his son to see if he was all right.

The police report did say the son called back to say he wasn't in an accident recently and was not, in fact, being held against his will or bound or gagged.

The caller, a man with a heavy Hispanic accident, called the Darien man from a phone with the number (203) 260-7349, which appears to be from the Bridgeport area. When police called the number, a recording stated that voice mail was not set up for that telephone.

Police are continuing to investigate this incident. Police say scams of this sort are common, and a Darien resident was called in a similar scam months ago.
