After someone approached a police officer on Feb. 8 about a stopped red Montero on Noroton Avenue with a tip that the driver seemed to be drunk, the officer followed the vehicle, police said.

Detective Mark Cappelli, acting as a spokesman for Darien Police, gave the following account of what happened next:

The car slowed on Noroton Avenue, then took a very wide turn onto Hecker Avenue, with the Montero's left tires crossing the double-yellow line.

Traveling east on Hecker, the vehicle then went into the westbound lane as it passed a stopped vehicle and drove onto the entrance ramp of Interstate 95. At that point, the police officer turned on his emergency lights and stopped the vehicle on the ramp.

A strong odor of alcohol came from the driver, Jean Volcy, 50, of Placid Avenue in Stratford, whose eyes were glassy and bloodshot. He was unsteady on his feet when he got out of the vehicle, then failed a field sobriety test.

Volcy was later released on a promise to appear Feb. 21 in state Superior Court in Stamfod.
