Chase Ends in Smashup, Escape on Dickinson Road

In a Wednesday night incident, a car, reported stolen in Stamford, ended up smashed on the lawn of a Dickinson Road home as the driver fled.

Someone driving a car stolen in Stamford evaded state police Wednesday on Interstate 95, drove into Darien and was chased by Darien police until the car struck an embankment on Dickinson Road, police said.

Captain Frederick Komm, a spokesman for the department, gave this account of the incident, which Stamford police are continuing to investigate:

The car, a 2012 Nissan Versa, was stolen at some point from Enterprise Rental in Stamford. At another point, the car and driver were on I-95 when state police unsuccessfully attempted to stop it.

Then the driver entered Darien, where a police officer—unaware of the previous attempt to stop the car—saw it at 10:29 p.m. speeding onto Dickinson Road from the Post Road.

As the police officer tried to catch up to the vehicle, the Nissan hit an embankment, then came to rest on the front lawn of 11 Dickinson Rd. (see map attached to this article). The driver, who was the only person in the car, got out and ran off.

A New Canaan Police K-9 unit went to the scene but was unable to find the driver.

The left front tire, left fender and front end of the car was damaged, and the vehicle was towed to the Stamford Police Department. Komm said he was not aware of any other vehicles damaged. Darien police had no information on how the car was stolen in Stamford.
