Cops: Darien Man DUI, Wrong Way on 1-Way Street

Police say this Darien man was intoxicated and driving the wrong way down a one-way portion of Center Street.

Police say that when a 27-year-old Darien man was asked why he was driving the wrong way down a one-way street, he said he couldn't give a reason.

But as he was talking, according to police, an officer saw he was giddy, had large pupils in his eyes, smelled of alcohol -- and had half of a 12-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon on the back seat.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

At 12:50 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, a police officer on patrol saw a 2002 Audi A6 driving the wrong way on a portion of Center Street, downtown, that is one-way.

By the time the officer stopped the car, driven by William Barclay of 8 Prospect St., the car had turned onto Tokeneke Road. Barclay was given a field sobriety test, which he failed, and he was taken into custody. He refused to take a breathalyzer test.

Barclay was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and later released on $250 bond. He is scheduled to appear Jan. 6 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
