Cops: Driver Said She Didn't Deserve Passing-School-Bus Ticket

You don't get a pass, even if you wait three minutes for a stopped school bus before you pass, as one Darien woman said she did, according to police.

Yes, she passed the school bus as it was picking up a child on Edgerton Road, the driver admitted to police (according to police).

But, no, she said (according to police), she didn't deserve the ticket -- that bus took too long to pick up a student in front of his home, she said.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

At 7:43 a.m. on Monday, March 3, police received a call that a driver had passed the school bus. The caller had the license plate number.

Police contacted the owner of the gray Audi Q5 -- Pamela Bass, 51, of Long Neck Point Rd. Bass is a former chairman of the now-defunct Darien Tree Commission, a town board.

Bass told police the bus was sitting still with lights flashing for three minutes or so when she drove around it, north on Edgerton Street. Police did not confirm that with the driver.

She was issued the ticket, which needed to be answered by Friday, March 14. It carries a $465 fine.

Editor's note: There was a second driver ticketed on a charge that she passed a school bus in a separate incident in the same week.
