Cops: Intoxicated Driver's SUV Rolls onto Car's Roof

Darien police say an intoxicated 21-year-old driver in a Ford Explorer rolled right over a station wagon stopped for a traffic light on Christmas Eve.

A passenger in a BMW station wagon stopped for a light on Brookside Road suddenly saw the rear tires of a Ford Explorer hanging down just beyond the right backseat window, according to police.

The SUV then went off the road to the right of the struck car -- but back on the ground -- struck a tree and came to rest, police said.

Here's how Darien police say that happened, and who was charged (in an accusation not proven in court) with driving while under the influence of alcohol:

Just before the accident at the intersection of Brookside and Post roads, Albertht Saravia, 21, of Spruce St., Stamford, had been speeding south on Brookside and driving over the double yellow line, police were told by a witness who had been driving north on the same road.

One of two passengers in the BMW had minor injuries.

When a police officer approached Saravia, the officer noticed he had alcohol on his breath, and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. Seravia told the officer he didn't know how fast he was driving.

Seravia said he had been drinking vodka after work. He failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, passing on the right and operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license.

He was later released after meeting a $250 cash bond and is scheduled to appear Friday, Jan. 3, in state Superior Court in Stamford.

I really don't agree with the law regarding DUI. When someone gets behind the wheel of a car after drinking, who doesn't know that they are risking the lives of every person that may come near them? My 8 year old cousin was killed by a drunk driver when she was walking home from school. Nothing was done to the driver. He should have spent the rest of his life in jail! Put people behind bars forever! Take away their drivers licenses forever! Make it mandatory that all drivers must be sober in every sense of the word! Stop them from killing, maiming and destroying lives! Change the law!
