Dealership Worker Charged with Cell Phone Theft

An employee of a car dealership in town stole a woman's cell phone, Darien police said.

A look at a surveillance video recording solved the case of a cell phone stolen from a customer at a local automobile dealership, Darien police said.

Darien police gave this account of the matter:

On Feb. 25, a customer at BMW of Darien, 140 Ledge Rd., was in the customer service area of the dealership, waiting for her vehicle to be serviced.

She went to use the restroom at one point, and apparently the cell phone fell out of her jacket pocket when she rose from her chair. When she returned to where she was sitting, the cell phone was gone.

A look at the store's surveillance video recording showed Anibal Erazo-Hidalgo, 24, of Daly Street in Stamford.

By looking at the video, police were able to determine that Erazo-Hidalgo was a suspect. When police questioned him, he admitted having stolen the cell phone and returned it to police.

On Thursday, April 4, Erazo-Hidalgo, of Daly Street in Stamford, was contacted, told of the arrest warrant on a charge of sixth-degree larceny and turned himself in to police. He was released on a promise to appear April 16 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
