Driver, 26, Charged with DUI on Post Road

A 26-year-old driver was charged with DWI and not driving with headlamps fully operational.

When a Darien police officer stopped a driver on a highway entrance ramp just after 2 a.m. Sunday and asked him for his driver's license, the man handed the officer a credit card, police said.

The 26-year-old man was later charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and operating a motor vehicle without headlamps fully operational.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court):

At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, an officer on patrol saw a 2008 Nissan Maxima driving west on the Post Road near Ledge Road with its right front headlight not working.

The officer stopped the car at the ramp of Interstate 95, where the officer saw the driver, Yuri Saldana of Admiral Street in West Haven, fumble with his wallet before mistakenly handing the officer a credit card.

The officer smelled alcohol on Saldana and asked how much he had been drinking. Saldana first answered that he drank one drink that night. When the officer asked a little later, Saldana said he had two drinks.

He failed field sobriety tests and refused to do a breathalyzer test. Saldana was held until he posted a $250 bond. He is scheduled to appear Dec. 10 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
