Update: Driver in Hit and Run Surrenders; Police Seek Arrest Warrant

Police say an 89-year-old Stamford man is responsible for Saturday's hit-and-run accident that left a 15-year-old Darien boy in critical condition.

Darien police say an 89-year-old Stamford man has surrendered after Saturday's hit-and-run accident that left a teenage boy in critical condition.

"He's being completely cooperative, and I have a lot of respect for him for coming here," said Sgt. Jeremiah Marron.

In what police have termed a "genuine accident," Sgt. Marron said the senior, whose name has yet been released, did not believe his car had struck the young boy on Saturday but "put two and two together," after reading of the accident in a local paper the following evening.

Attorney Mark Sherman of Stamford said his client, a WWII veteran and a former Stamford Public Schools teacher, turned himself in to authorities Monday morning.

"His senses just aren't quite as sharp as other people," said Sherman. "He is a model citizen, and he is extremely sorry for what happened."

Police say the driver's silver Toyota Camry, fled the scene after striking a 15-year-old Darien boy from behind; the young man had been walking northbound on Hoyt Street—in the road—toward New Canaan.

"There are no sidewalks," said Sgt. Marron. "It was definitely a contributing factor that he was walking in the road."

The young man was rushed to Stamford Hospital on Saturday afternoon with life-threatening head injuries. His condition has since stabilized, and Sgt. Marron said he is currently "recovering at home."

"We're very fortunate; very fortunate," said Capt. Fred Komm, noting that the situation would have only been worsened had the driver been speeding.

Darien police say they have seized the driver's license and seek a warrant for his arrest on the charge of evading responsibility, a misdemeanor charge that Capt. Komm said, however unlikely, can carry a penalty of jail-time.

Police look to issue an arrest warrant affidavit and the identities of both the driver and victim by tomorrow afternoon.
