Fire Log: Jammed Elevator; Slick Roads

In addition to eight false alarms, a jammed elevator and the havoc of two storms top the past week's fire log.

The following information was provided by Fire Marshall Bob Buch:

Monday, Jan. 25

PERSON STUCK IN ELEVATOR: At approximately 6:26 a.m. Darien Fire responded to Darien Railroad Station after receiving a 911 phone call from a commuter trapped in the elevator. Officials say the elevators are equipped with emergency phones. Buch described the rescue as a simple matter of "opening the door with an elevator key, and letting out the poor guy."

TREE & WIRES DOWN: Heavy winds and rains brought down a large tree on Middlesex Road, near the intersection of Laurel Lane, which subsequently entangled with electrical wires and sparked a small brush fire, said Buch. Noroton Heights Fire responded to the scene at about 11:18 a.m. to put out the small fire, described as "a few sparks and smoke."

FIRE ALARM: At 11:25 a.m., all three fire departments responded to a fire alarm at the Darien High School, triggered by a power outage.

Tuesday, Jan. 26

MVA/INJURIES: Noroton Heights Fire responded to an accident involving a Porsche and Toyota Camry at the intersection of Noroton Ave. and Middlesex Road just before 2 p.m. to clean up a fluid leak, officials said. Post 53 assisted with minor injuries.

Thursday, Jan. 28

MVA/INJURIES: A Jeep Cherokee rolled over on Hoyt Street at approximately 7:30 a.m. Noroton Heights Fire and Post 53 responded to the accident, attributable, they say, to an unanticipated snow storm which left roads slick and driving conditions treacherous. The accident was one of eight reported throughout the day, described by police as fender benders.

Saturday, Jan. 30

SMOKE IN HOUSE: Noroton Heights Fire responded to an early morning call from a resident on Waldon Lane who reported that smoke from the fireplace had pervaded the home. Reports indicate call was placed at about 8:30 a.m.
