Fire Log: Week of Jan. 11

Construction at The Goose sets off the fire alarm and a driver is rescued from a car fire on the I95.

After a slow start to the week, it was full steam ahead for Darien's volunteer fire departments, with a handful of alarms, hazardous waste, two motor vehicle accidents and two car fires at the I95 service area.

Wednesday, Jan. 13

MVA/INJURY: The Noroton Fire Department responded to a two-car accident at the intersection of Hollow Tree Ridge Road and Hillside Ave. at 1:20 p.m. No extrication was necessary, though one driver was treated for minor injuries.

C.O. ALARM ACTIVATION: A resident on Point O'Woods Road South was charged with a $100 fine when Darien Fire responded to a false carbon monoxide alarm. Fire officials point to low batteries as reason for the activation and urge residents to routinely check fire and smoke alarms.

Thursday, Jan. 14

FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION: A malfunctioning fire alarm welcomed grocery shoppers to Trader Joes on Thursday. Darien Fire Department responded to the store on the Post Road at about 1:30 p.m., and left the managers with a $100 fine.

Friday, Jan. 15

FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION: By the time a resident on Fitch Ave. had called to cancel a false fire alarm at about 9 a.m., all three volunteer fire departments arrived at the doorstep.

HAZMAT ODOR: Ten minutes later, Darien Fire found ammonia in a container at the dump on Ledge Road. Anything hazardous, liquid (paint), or medical in nature may not be disposed of at the dump. For more information on the disposal of hazardous waste call the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection at 203-424-4193.

FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION: Norton Fire Department went to church just before 10 a.m., when a fire alarm went off at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. It was a false alarm.

TRUCK FIRE: At about 11:17 a.m., Darien and Noroton Heights Fire extinguished a small engine compartment fire in a Freightliner Tractor Trailer parked at the I95 North service area.

Saturday, Jan. 16

FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION: All three fire departments responded to a Lake Drive residence when construction at the home set off the fire alarm. The false alarm resulted in a $100 fine. Fire officials remind residents to call their alarm companies to temporarily disable alarms during times of construction, as dust can often trigger alarms.

SMOKE SCARE: CVS may have been processing one too many new year photos. The Darien Fire Department arrived at the pharmacy to tend to the smoking photo processing machine just after 10 a.m.

Sunday, Jan. 17

FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION: Darien fire whizzed down the Post Road to The Goose where construction had set off the fire alarm. The false alarm resulted in a $100 fine.

VEHICLE FIRE: A State Trooper pulled a driver from a "fully involved car fire," at 9:38 p.m., fire officials say. Noroton Heights responded to the scene at the I95 South service area; officials report the car had been involved in an accident on the interstate, which had subsequently set the car ablaze.
