Handyman Scam Targets Darien Resident

"My husband" walks away with $40.

The following information was provided by the Darien Police Department:

Police say a resident of Thomasina Lane was scammed out of $40 after handing the cash over to a man he thought would help fix a leaky faucet.

According to the complainant, a “handyman” who claimed to work for a company by the name of I Rent My Husband LLC, showed up on his doorstep at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 5, asking if he could lend a hand with any odd jobs.

A faucet needed replacing, so in exchange for a business card, the homeowner handed over $40 cash and sent the handyman to the Home Depot. He left in a red, four-door sedan with NY plates.

“7 o’clock rolls around and he hadn’t come back,” said Capt. Fred Komm of the Darien Police Department. “Something was amiss.”

The homeowner called the number on the business card and spoke to the co-owner. He discovered that his handyman had no relation to I Rent My Husband LLC and deduced that he may have picked up a business card at an area home repair shop and used it as a ploy.

Police described the suspect as a 40-year-old, 5’8” white male of medium build with black hair and a “very large hook nose." He speaks broken English and might be of Italian decent.

The complainant is out of pocket $40 and still has a broken faucet.
