Home Entered, Homeowner Awakened, Thief Rides off on Stolen Bike

Awoken by a noise, a homeowner on Hollow Tree Ridge Road sees a thief riding away on a bicycle stolen from the house.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m on Friday, a homeowner on the 600 block of Hollow Tree Ridge Road was woken up by a noise downstairs. He checked to see if his son was up, but his son was fast asleep — as was a dog with him.

Then the man heard the screen door shut, and from a second-story window he saw a white male, possibly 16 or 17 years old, ride away on a bicycle. He was carrying a bag of some sort under his arm.

The man didn't see which way the thief went when leaving the driveway for the street.

Which turned out to be stolen: The man went downstairs and found the inside door to the garage open and a Trek hybrid mountain bike, about 20 years old, missing from hooks on a wall. The bicycle is valued at $700.

The downstairs floor of the house had an open back door (the screen door was shut, but unlocked) and numerous open windows.

The man woke his son to see if he knew who the person downstairs might have been. The son said he didn't.

Police were called to the house at 3:35 a.m. They found no sign of forced entry.

The man described the thief as a white male, 16 to 17 years old, wearing a blue shirt, light-colored shorts and a "boonie-style hat."

Whatever was being carried away in the bag that the homeowner saw under one of thief's arms, no other items were immediately known to be missing.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
