Man Held on $200K Bond After Domestic Dispute

William Newman of Canton, Mass., is charged with burglary, harassment, and driving without a license.

A 29-year-old Massachusetts man is being held in lieu of a $200,000 bond on charges he entered the Darien home of his estranged wife's parents where she had been staying following their recent separation.

The incident occurred last Tuesday, July 27, at a home on Lafarge Road, said Darien Police Capt. Fred Komm.

According to the report, William Newman of Canton, Mass., arrived at the house and rang the doorbell. When there was no response, he went to the back of the house and, finding a door open, entered.

There, he was confronted by his estranged wife, who—telephone in hand—informed him she had the Darien Police Derpartment on the line.

Newman backed away and hurried into his car, a 2005 BMW 530, but he was apprehended by the Darien police before he could leave. He was found to be driving without a license, Komm said.

He persisted in texting his wife despite her protestations that she did not want to have contact with him and feared for her personal safety, Komm added.

Newman was charged with burglary in the first degree, harassment in the second degree, and driving without a license. He appeared in court on July 27.

Newman is also wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department on a spousal abuse charge arising from a June 19 incident there. The warrant for his arrest is outstanding, Komm said.
