Man Threatening Suicide Captured At His Brookside Drive Home

Armed with two hatchets, he climbed out window onto roof.

Darien Police said they were confronted by an agitated man at 55 Brookside Dr. Saturday afternoon after responding to a report that a male assaulted a 91-year-old family member at that address.

The victim sustained minor injuries and fled the residence, police said.

In a news release issued Friday night, the department's public information officer, Sgt. Jeremiah Marron, said the man, whom he didn't identify, was yelling suicidal threats from a second-story window when officers arrived.

Armed with two hatchets, Marron said he warned he was not coming down and climbed onto the roof of the house.

"On several occasions he acted in a threatening manner towards the officers by raising the hatchets above his head," Marron said.

Marron said officers trained in crisis negotiation began talking with the man, and after about 90 minutes he climbed back into the house, but remained barricaded in his bedroom. Officers continued negotiating with him for about 30 minutes, Marron said, and the man exited his bedroom and surrendered to police.

He was charged with third-degree assault of a victim over 60 years old, second-degree threatening, disorderly conduct, and third-degree criminal mischief.

After being processed at Darien Police headquarters, the suspect was taken to Stamford Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, Marron said.
