I'm a big believer in people being innocent until proven guilty, but considering all the pledges high schools make students and student athletes take, I can't believe this girl was still on the lacrosse team. If she'd had a joint in her car, she'd have been tossed off the team as soon as the police report was filed.
It tells me NCHS doesn't take texting and driving very seriously .

personally, i'm tired of the joggers around here jogging IN the road- and half of them running the wrong way (you are supposed to run towards the traffic so you can see the cars coming-correct me if i'm wrong?) and now this poor CHILD has to deal with this. Texting or not, it's time we put in some sidewalks around here....

Absolutely agree on innocent until proven guilty. My cynical side tells me since it was lacrosse (the holy grail of NCHS sports for unknown reasons) she was allowed to remain a member of the team and free to continue participating. Maybe this event will trigger a rule for the athletic department going forward that would bar participation for anyone facing any sort of criminal charge (with the exception of minor traffic violations, which this was certainly not).

Actually, NCHS has a code of conduct which supposedly covers criminal activity and a whole host of other stuff.
http://www.newcanaan.k12.ct.us/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=36113& Of course they may have taken some disciplinary action which privacy laws prohibit them from disclosing, but to me it looks terrible for the school. I'm just saying I can't believe most schools would choose to wait for a case this serious to be adjudicted before taking action. Playing on a team is a priviledge not a right. I just think it sends a terrible message to the other kids, especially given the ridiculously long list of minor infractions that they claim you can be disciplined for. Plus its a huge middle finger from the whole town of New Canaan to the family of the victim.

Little miss cath can take a hike as far as I'm concerned. Poor child? Are you blasted serious?! The child you speak of ran a man down and killed him! She quite literally ran him over; the car she was driving ran right over his back and squashed him. What about his poor family, namely the Dorsey family. Tough noogies that she has to deal w/ it. She should not have been surfing the web while driving, it's against the law to even be on the phone while driving. Comments such as yours honestly make me ill. Not to mention, Ken was a friend of mine who had less of a chance than a squirrel. And for your info, he was not running in the middle of the street! He was running off to the side. How about you actually read the article regarding the info prior to shooting your mouth off in defense of a killer, which is what Brianna is.
At least there are 2 sensible individuals here who get who the guilty party is. Both of you are correct in the fact that it's absolutely insane that NCHS allowed her to participate in any team sport, much less the following day. Holy Grail must be the reason, thank you for that viable explanation.

I know I would not be able to even get out of bed, let alone play lacrosse after killing another human being. Boggles the mind.

Agreed. Kids are callous and self-absorbed these days, which is essentially the root of the problem. She probably thought "Nothing is going to happen to me or anyone, I'm just going to use my phone on the road."
Makes me sick... why aren't parents these days teaching empathy?
sebastian dangerfield July 16, 2012 at 02:02 am
yep jeck--only kids cause accidents (accidents in ct = 2441 people known as kids-- adults 0)
when kids do something--they are callous and their parents bad parents.... yet the amazing thing is, i read the Ny Post, the NY Times, The Wall St Journal--and lots of online editions--and , ummmm it does seem like actually adults commit an awful lot of crimes. They speak on cell phones. They are arreseted for DWI. Jason Kidd the point guard arrested today for smashing through stuff and being arrested...should we be speaking to Jason Kidd's parents? Or, um-is this maybe a little too harsh to say "Kids these days==" ?? Arent people of all ages, races, genders out there making mistakes?
