Pair Indicted On Bank Robbery Spree

Chase Bank and Citibank in Darien were among the banks hit.

Two Stamford men were indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday for a 2009 robbery spree that struck a dozen Fairfield County banks, including two Darien locations.

Spero Moschos, 29, and Christopher Davis, 34, were charged in Bridgeport with a total of 12 attempted and successful robberies from the period of May 4 to August 30, 2009.

Moschos is charged in all 12 counts of the indictment, while Davis is charged in eight counts, according to the announcement from Nora R. Dannehy, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

The two incidents in Darien were a June 10 attempted robbery at the Chase Bank on Post Road and a July 7 robbery of $1,600 at the Citibank on Heights Road. Moschos and Davis are alleged to have cooperated in both.

Other banks hit by the pair include People's Bank, 385 Connecticut Ave., Norwalk on May 4; TD Banknorth, 50 Charles St., Westport on May 16, in which $2,012 was stolen; First County Bank, 1110 Hope St., Stamford on May 30, in which $5,000 was stolen; Hudson City Bank, 596 Westport Ave., Norwalk on June 11 in which $5,403 was stolen; First County Bank, 1042 High Ridge Road in Stamford on June 23 in which $4,200 was stolen; and Patriot Bank, 1 Danbury Road in Wilton on July 23 in which $10,389 was stolen, according to the indictment.

The four banks in which Moschos acted without Davis include First County Bank, 1260 Post Road East in Westport on May 8 in which $6,800 was stolen; TD Banknorth, 50 Charles St. in Westport on May 15; Patriot Bank, 1755 Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield on July 6, in which $1,900 was stolen; and Fairfield County Bank, 941 Danbury Road in Wilton on Aug. 30, in which $2,168 was stolen, according to the indictment.

If convicted, Moschos and Davis could face up to 20 years in prison on each count. The two have been incarcerated since Aug. 26, 2009 after they were arrested by Stamford Police, according to the announcement.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Murphy, and the investigation is being conducted by the FBI, with assistance from police departments in Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, Darien, Fairfield, and Wilton.
