Police Blotter: A Busy New Year's Eve, Day

Larceny, four DWIs, an underage drinking party and a report of a stolen car keeps the Darien Police busy during the last few days of 2009 and the start of 2010.

The following information was provided by the Darien Police Department:

Wednesday, Dec. 30

LARCENY: The larceny of several items from a residence on Mansfield Avenue was reported to police around 1:15 p.m. Over the past few weeks, the family noticed several items were missing including a stainless steel swiss watch, electric razor, Nikon camera and two bracelets. The bracelets are described as an 18 karat square braid gold bracelet and a 10 karat flat gold bracelet; together, they are valued at $1100. The owners of the residence said they may on occasion have left their house unlocked. Darien Police Captain Fred Komm said the larceny is "unrelated" to the jewelry larcenies that took place last week.

LARCENY: The larceny of a wallet from an employee of Sunny Nails, 1062 Post Road, was reported. The wallet was taken on Monday, Dec. 28, according to the employee. She said she arrived at work at 10:30 a.m. and left around 7 p.m. She did not arrive home until 9:30 p.m., when she then noticed her wallet was not in her purse. That day, three women had been in the nail salon along with four children. One customer had been in the area of the break room where the purse was kept. The red wallet contained $1000 in cash and several credit cards. Fraudulent charges totaling over $2,200 were made on the credit cards between 1:54 p.m. and 2:41 p.m. at various locations in Greenwich including Staples, CVS and Stop & Shop.

The woman who may have taken the wallet is described as Hispanic, 5'6", thin build, pierced nose, with shoulder length dirty blonde hair. She was wearing all black clothing and black boots.

CRIMINAL ATTEMPT AT LARCENY: Shawn Cakowski, 39, of Stamford was charged with criminal attempt at larceny in the 6th degree. He turned himself in after being notified there was a warrant for his arrest. The warrant stemmed from an incident on Nov. 9 at 71 Post Road, a commercial construction site. Cakowski allegedly was in the middle of removing a set of metal stairs from the site and loading them onto a trailer when another individual stopped him. He was released on a promise to appear and has a court date of Jan. 12.

Thursday, Dec. 31

DWI: Drew Turnbull, 44, of Rowayton was charged with DWI and failure to drive right around 12:15 a.m. He was driving a 2004 Chevy pickup on Tokeneke Road in the area of Cliff Avenue. An officer observed Turnbull driving down the center of the road, according to police reports. Turnbull allegedly failed his field sobriety test. He posted $250 bond and has a court date of Jan. 8.

POSESSION OF ALCOHOL BY A MINOR: A 17-year old female was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor at a residence on Hickory Lane. Police received a call to the underage drinking tip line around 10 p.m. When they arrived to the residence, several young people were running out the rear door to the garage. A male guest said that party crashers had brought over their own alcohol to the residence. The party crashers were described as mostly junior and senior high school students. Police found over 50 cans of beer and bottles of wine and vodka at the residence. The charge is a payable fine.

Friday, Jan. 1

DWI: Angel Castillo-Cabrera, 37, of Stamford was charged with DWI and operating with a suspended license around 1:39 a.m. He was driving a 1991 Chevy Astro van. An officer parked on the side of the road by I-95 Exit 13 southbound observed Castillo-Cabrera's car making a loud noise. The front right tire was shredded and the car was riding on the tire's rim. Castillo-Cabrera failed a field sobriety test, according to police reports. He posted $250 bond and has a court date of Jan. 11.

DWI: David Wojcikowski, 28, of Fairfield was charged with DWI and failure to drive right at 7 a.m. Police received several 911 calls about a motorist parked in the eastbound lane, facing eastbound, on Heights Road. The engine of the car was running and the vehicle was in drive. According to police reports, Wojcikowski was slumped over the wheel. He failed a field sobriety test. Wojcikowski posted $250 bond and has a court date of Jan. 11.

Sunday, Jan. 3

STOLEN CAR: A stolen car was reported from outside a residence on Maple Street. The car, a 2000 Dodge Caravan, was last seen at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2. The next day, the vehicle was noticed missing around 10:47 a.m. The owner has both sets of keys and the car was left locked. The padlock to the garage had been broken and two machetes were missing.

DWI: Erik Gonzaga, 30, of Mamaroneck, N.Y., was charged with DWI, failure to drive right and evading responsibility around 6:16 a.m. He struck a utility pole by the entrance to I-95 Exit 13 southbound and his car was stopped on the traffic island. Police observed the car's windshield was shattered and the airbags were deployed. The operator, Gonzaga, was not in the vehicle. Police stopped another vehicle that approached the scene; the operator said Gonzaga had called him and said he had been in an accident. Gonzaga was hiding behind Friendly's restaurant. He admitted to police that he had consumed alcohol and had fallen asleep shortly before hitting the utility pole, according to police reports. He posted $240 bond and has a court date of Jan. 14.
