Police Blotter: Happy Hour Ends in Accident, Assault, Arrest

The week of Feb. 15 through Feb. 21 is another light week, as police respond to one domestic violence call and two DWI incidents.

The following information was provided by the Darien Police Department:

Wednesday, Feb. 17

DISORDERLY CONDUCT: At about 8:30 a.m., police received a report from a Darien resident who said her ex-husband to be had pushed her into a wall with his chest. The couple, currently in the process of divorce, has three children who witnessed the verbal argument become physical. The Darien man appeared in court last week. Police say the matter was subsequently referred to the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.

Friday, Feb. 19

DWI: Black ice can make for hazardous driving conditions; so can driving while intoxicated. Dwain Carryl, 33 of Norwalk pleaded the former but was charged with the latter at approximately 3 a.m. when police say he "decided to make his own way" down the Post Road, cruising over a traffic island and subsequently hitting a traffic light pole and control sign. The accident rendered Carryl's car inoperable, and the vehicle was towed from the scene near Exit 13 of the I95 Southbound.

According to Captain Fred Komm, Carryl said he lost control because he drove over some black ice.

"There was no black ice," said Capt. Komm.

Police say Carryl smelled distinctly of alcohol and failed his field sobriety test. He was arrested on charges of failure to turn right and driving while intoxicated. Capt. Komm said bond was set at $60, "probably all he had on him." Carryl has a court date of March 1.

DWI, ASSAULT, BREACH OF PEACE: An end-of-the week Happy Hour at Rory's restaurant is never quiet, but it's rarely the scene of the bru ha ha that was last Friday. At around 6:30 p.m., and after a few drinks, 67 year old Robert Dodd of Rowayton left the restaurant, got in his Inifiniti, and hit a BMW in the parking lot. When the BMW owner tried to obtain accident information, Dodd denied ever being in an accident. A witness, who later reported that Dodd could not talk or walk without assistance, tried to intervene; he urged Dodd to call a cab, before getting in a more serious accident.

Dodd wouldn't have it, and the witness threatened to call the police.

"He said: 'Go ahead, call the cops.' There were a few expletives in there too," said Captain Komm. "And then struck the witness in the face."

The witness, now victim, called 911 to report the accident-turned-assault. Police say he suffered a bloody nose but escaped serious injury. When police arrived, Dodd refused to take a breathalyzer and failed his field sobriety test. Bond was set at $500. Dodd has a court date of March 1.
