Police Blotter: Marijuana Possession, Damaged Cruiser

A low number of non-DUI charges were reported on the week, but a sobriety checkpoint over the weekend helped officers make six drunk driving arrests.

The following information was provided by the Darien Police Department:

Tuesday, June 1

POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA: Around 10:15 p.m., police watched as a 1998 Honda Accord nearly collided with a second vehicle on Hoyt Street near Greenwood Ave. When an officer pulled over and interviewed the driver—identified as Labinot Pergjoni, 25, of Stamford—an odor of marijuana was detected. The officer then spotted a glass vial containing less than a gram of marijuana sitting on the front seat, prompting Pergjoni's arrest. He was charged with possession and released on a promise to appear in court June 14.

BREACH OF THE PEACE: Around 5:18 p.m., an officer passing by Matsuri (390 Post Road) observed a male and female arguing loudly in the restaurant's parking lot. When the officer stopped to investigate, the woman—identified as Emma Goff, 20, of Bronxville, N.Y.—was described as uncooperative and upset. The officer was able to ascertain that the pair had been dating for four years and that the fight had been sparked by an argument over directions. A witness who called 911 about the incident reported having seen a physical altercation between the two in which Goff hit her boyfriend and threw an object at him, but the caller said that the boyfriend had not fought back. No significant injuries were sustained, according to police. Goff was charged with breech of the peace and released on a promise to appear in court June 4.

FIVE-VEHICLE WRECK: At 4:55 a.m., Darien officers responded to a report of an alleged domestic disturbance at the northbound Darien Service Plaza. The caller said a naked man had become "physical" during an argument with a woman at the rest stop, intermittently yelling that he was Jesus. He took off down the road in a blue Saturn before officers reached him, but he was later apprehended around exit 16 by Darien, Norwalk, and state police units.

The commotion didn't end there, however: when a passing driver became distracted by the scene in the shoulder, she swerved suddenly into the path of a tandem tractor trailer to correct her course. The tractor trailer driver braked to avoid the vehicle and turned sharply, causing the big rig to flip over and collide with four other cars before slamming into a tree. It took rescuers over three hours to extract the driver from the mangled cab, but his injuries—and those of the other drivers—were miraculously minor.

A police official said an exit sign that had been wiped out during the accident fell onto one of Darien's cruisers, causing an estimated $1800 in damage. The investigation of the incident is being handled by Connecticut State Police.

LARCENY: Police received a report of an apparent jewelry theft from a residence on Crimmins Road. Though there was no sign of forced entry, the owner reported numerous items missing from a jewelry box kept in the second floor master bedroom. The articles included three men's gold bracelets valued at $450 apiece, a Stamford High School Class of 1973 ring ($250), an 18K gold engagement ring ($450), and a miscellaneous ring ($30). The owner last recalled seeing the items on May 20 and realized they were missing on June 3. Police said the investigation remains open.
