Police Blotter: Stop & Shop Employees Charged with Stealing Inventory

Police also arrested a man for allegedly shoplifting from the Orvis store in Darien.

Marijuana Possession/Sale: Two Darien men were arrested at a seatbelt checkpoint Tuesday after police found over 20 grams of marijuana in the vehicle.

Larceny: A wallet was reported stolen by a member of the Darien YMCA (2420 Post Road) Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the man came into the facility to work out, left his clothes in an unlocked locker, and returned after about 40 minutes. When he left the YMCA and went to purchase coffee, he realized his wallet had gone missing.

THURSDAY, JUNE 2

Larceny: Two employees of the Goodwives Shopping Center Stop & Shop (25 Old Kings Highway North) were arrested after allegedly attempting to steal items from the store. Police received a call from the manager telling them that he had detained DeWayne Clarke, 28, of Bridgeport and Andre Rainford, 24, of Stratford in his office after they were observed hiding away soap, deodorant, body wash, and quantities of Zyrtec in a shopping cart and on their persons. The value of the items was estimated at $177. Clarke and DeWayne were both arrested and charged with sixth degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth degree larceny. They posted a $500 bond and are set to appear in court June 15.

Marijuana Possession: Anthony Avery, 21, of Stamford was charged with possession of marijuana, misuse of license plates, driving without insurance, and driving an unregistered motor vehicle after a traffic stop. According to police, Avery was driving southbound on Post Road around 9:40 a.m. when an officer ran his license plate and determined that it did not belong on Avery's vehicle. When the officer stopped Avery's 2000 Volvo S40 and approached the car, he reportedly detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Avery was arrested after a subsequent search turned up two small plastic bags of the drug on his person totaling 6 grams. He posted $250 bond and is set to appear in court June 13.

SUNDAY, JUNE 5

Shoplifting: Ronald Jones, 66, of Carmel, N.Y. was charged with shoplifting after allegedly steeling a fishing reel from the Orvis retail store in Darien (432 Post Rd.). A manager told police that he had observed Jones walking out of the store with a bulge in his pocket and that a $209 reel had gone missing from the shelves at the same moment. The manager said Jones had been the only customer in the store at the time. After the manager contacted police, they approached Jones, who reportedly admitted to taking the reel. Jones posted a $500 bond and is set to appear in court June 15.
