Police Blotter: Vandalized Mailboxes and a Boat Rescue

Darien police also responded to a larceny at CVS last week.

MONDAY, JUNE 27

Driving under the influence: Joseph Sinaguglia, 23, of Stamford was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, following too closely, and improper use of high beams. According to Capt. Fred Komm, an officer traveling westbound on Post Road noticed Sinaguglia's 1998 Nissan Altima following less than a car length behind around 2:45 a.m. After letting Sinaguglia pass and stopping him near Academy Street, Komm said the officer detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his person. Sinaguglia was arrested after reportedly failing field sobriety tests. He posted a $50 bond.

TUESDAY, JUNE 28

Boat taking on water: Police were called to the vicinity of Shippan Point after a report of a 20-foot Proline Bowrider taking on water. When the marine unit arrived, Komm said officers instructed the boat's two occupants to put lifejackets on and began pumping out water. With the help of a marine unit from Stamford, police cleared the boat and were able to tow it back to safety.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29

Larceny: $25 in cash was reported stolen form the cab of a moving truck parked on Ridgefield Drive. A worker told police he spotted two males around 14-16 years old inside the cab wearing tie-dye shirts and white baseball caps. When he approached the vehicle, they reportedly ran off.

THURSDAY, JUNE 30

Larceny: Jimmy Greene, 54, of Norwalk was charged with sixth degree larceny and shoplifting after an incident at CVS (964 Post Rd.). Police initially received a report of a theft from the store around 10:23 a.m. According to a CVS employee, a man had placed merchandise in several black plastic bags and exited the store without paying, triggering an alarm. Based on a description provided of the suspect, an officer soon spotted and approached Greene, who was standing on a platform at Darien Station. Greene admitted he had just been at CVS, Komm said, and the officer found two plastic bags sitting next to him containing items matching the stolen merchandise. Greene was subsequently arrested and posted a $1000; he is scheduled to appear in court July 14. Komm said the stolen items — Trojan condoms and NyQuil — were valued at $117.

Burglary: $20,000 in tools were reported stolen from a house undergoing renovations on Thomasina Lane.

Larceny: The manager of Duchess Restaurant (306 Post Rd.) reported two separate thefts of cash from his office dating back to May. The first theft ($330) allegedly occurred between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. on May 21 and the second ($660) during the same timeframe on May 25. Komm said the office had been left unsecured on both occasions because the lock was inoperable. Police suspect an employee of the restaurant may be responsible for the thefts. The matter remains under investigation.

FRIDAY, JULY 1:

Attempted burglary: Police received a report of an attempted burglary around 9:52 p.m. at a residence on Post Road near the Stamford border. Komm said the homeowners, who were out at the time, contacted police after their babysitter called to say that someone had tried to enter the house. The babysitter later told police that she had been in a back room of the residence when she heard someone attempt to pull open the front door. When she went to make sure the back door was locked, someone attempted pull that door open, too. She told police that she saw a man run down the driveway and get into an SUV, which drove away. Police conducted a sweep of the area but found nothing unusual.

MONDAY, JULY 4:

Larceny: A white iPhone valued at $200 was reported stolen by a Darien resident around 3 p.m. The owner, who had been eating frozen yogurt outside of Swizzles (1029 Post Rd.), told police he had left the phone on a table for less than a minute to throw away his trash. When he returned, the item was gone.

Vandalism: Four mailboxes on Royle Road and a fifth on Mansfield Avenue were vandalized during the overnight hours of July 3 to 4. The mailboxes were knocked off or their posts bent.
