A 45-year-old caregiver for an elderly couple on Five Mile River Road stole money from them to pay for phone calls , including calls to Tanzania, and gasoline, Darien police said.

Police gave this account of the matter:

Garuda Mallya of Norwalk was a caregiver for the couple, who each have Alzheimer's.

Relatives of the couple told police that they had noticed unauthorized charges on a credit card bill. The charges were for restaurants, liquor stores and for gasoline.

In addition, there were bills charging the victims $630 for telephone calls, along with $190 in international calling card bills, some of which were for calling Tanzania.

Mallya, of West Cedar Sreet in Norwalk, was arrested Tuesday, May 28, on two counts of second degree larceny from a person 60 years old or older and six counts of illegal use of accredit card. She was released on a written promise to appear June 7 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
