Police: Darien Woman Stole $6,500-Plus from Hospitalized Stepfather

A 26-year-old Darien woman stole more than $6,500 from her hospitalized stepfather's bank account through fraudulent use of checks and a debit card, police said.

Cara Tangreti, a 26-year-old Darien woman stole more than $6,500 from her hospitalized stepfather's bank account through fraudulent use of checks and a debit card, police said.

Darien police gave this account of the matter:

The stepfather had been hospitalized from Oct. 16 to 28, 2012, and when he got back home, he found that his bank statements showed numerous checks had been forged and fraudulent ATM and debit card transactions had been completed. He complained to police on Nov. 29.

A total of $6,560.34 was fraudulently removed from the man's account. The stepfather said he thought Tangreti had gotten access to his checkbook and ATM card. She was questioned about the fraudulent transactions and acknowledged responsibility.

Police applied for a warrant for Tangreti's arrest, which was approved. She is charged with third-degree larceny, third degree forgery and fraudulent use of an ATM.
On Tuesday, April 16, police went to her home on Old Kings Highway South and arrested her. She later posted a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear Friday, April 26, in state Superior Court in Stamford.
