Police Find Pot Smokers, Not Boozers at DUI Checkpoint

Darien police conducting a DUI checkpoint on Hoyt Street on the night of Aug. 22 to Aug. 23 said they found five drivers with a small amount of marijuana rather than people driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Police gave these accounts (which are accusations not proven in court) leading to charges against five drivers (in each case, police smelled the odor of marijuana or alcohol when they spoke with the driver; in all the marijuana cases, tickets were given for having less than half an ounce of it):

  • 10:21 p.m. -- A 26-year-old Stamford man had a small plastic bag of marijuana in the center console and a cigarette on the floor next to the driver's side door.
  • 11:48 p.m. -- A 23-year-old Norwalk woman had a small film container with a small amount of marijuana on her.
  • 12:13 a.m. -- A 28-year-old Norwalk man had marijuana in a small bag in his pocket.
  • 12:20 a.m. -- A 30-year-old Stamford man had marijuana in a small plastic bag in a compartment on the driver's side door of his car and another plastic bag with marijuana in one of his pockets.
  • 2:13 a.m. -- A 19-year-old Stamford woman was charged after police canine Zulu helped police find a glass bowl smoking device with burnt marijuana residue in her glove compartment and four marijuana cigarettes elsewhere inside the vehicle.
