Police: Man Stole Parts from Darien Car Dealership

A Ridgefield man was seen removing a box from Land Rover of Darien, which was closed at the time, Darien police said.

Someone spotted a man leaning over a fence at Land Rover of Darien and removing a big box from the dealership several Sundays ago, according to Darien police who arrested a Ridgefield man Saturday on a larceny charge.

Darien police gave this account of the matter (the Darien police version of events is an accusation, not a conviction):

At about 4 p.m. Sunday, July 15, someone reported to police that a man standing on something had removed a box by reaching over the fence at Land Rover of Darien, 80 Post Rd., which was closed at the time.

The man put the eight-foot-long box in his vehicle and left. It was later determined that the box contained vehicle roof rails of an unknown value.

The witness was able to give police a description of the thief's car and the license plate number.

Police traced the license plate number to Michael Hansum, 57, of Sycamore Lane, Ridgefield. When police called him, he admitted he had taken the box, which he later returned.

Police applied for and received a warrant for Hansum's arrest. When he was told the warrant had been issued, he turned himself in at Darien Police headquarters on Saturday. He was charnged with fifth-degree larceny and released on a written promise to appear Aug. 14 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
