Police: Suspicious Powder, Letters Were a Hoax
The threatening letters and suspicious powder delivered to two Tokeneke homes were a hoax perpetrated by two girls, Darien police announced Monday night.
Police issued this news release at 9:22 p.m. Monday:
The Darien Police Department has identified two female juvenile Darien residents as being responsible for what can now be deemed a hoax.
Over the past 24 hours, Darien police received reports of threatening letters containing suspicious powder being delivered to two separate Darien residences.
Investigation of these incidents has taken a tremendous amount of time involving Darien Police, State Police, the FBI, the Stamford Police Bomb Squad, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Darien Fire Marshal's Office, the Darien Fire Department, and Darien EMS.
At approximately 5 p.m. today, members of the Darien Police Detective Division, Youth Division, and the School Resource Officer met with two female juveniles and their parents regarding the incidents.
Both juvenile subjects subsequently confessed and took full responsibility for both incidents, explaining that the unidentified powder that was used was a non-toxic food product.
Darien Police also learned that the targeted residences were chosen randomly and that there was no connection between the two juveniles and the targeted residences.

At this point the Darien Police are confident that the investigation will be limited to the two occurrences reported and that there is no evidence to suggest that any person is in any danger as a result of these incidents.
Outside agencies are still scheduled to conduct tests on the recovered substances for verification purposes.

These latest developments will be discussed with the State's Attorney's office and a further course of action, including referrals to Juvenile Court, will be taken.
The names of the two suspects will not be released due to their juvenile status. At this time the Darien Police Department has taken over investigation of this incident and no additional information will be released until juvenile referrals have been issued.
