Crash Sends Pole Flying 25 Feet, Driver to Hospital

A four-door sedan crashes hard enough against a utility pole to send it 25 feet.

A 33-year-old Norwalk woman was sent to a hospital with head injuries Thursday after her car struck two utility poles on the Post Road, snapping one of them and sending it 25 feet.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

The woman, Megan Bendish of Algonquin Road, was in the parking lot at Friendly's Restaurant when police arrived at about 11:30 p.m. She told police she was following a car that stopped quickly, so she turned to avoid hitting it. Police noted that it was snowing that night.

She had no passengers with her in the car, a four-door 2012 Subaru sedan. Police cited her for driving too fast for conditions.

As many as 56 customers of Connecticut Light & Power were without electricity for between one and two hours until power was restored.

After the vehicle was removed by a tow truck, the Subaru's bumper remained wrapped around the base of the snapped utility pole.
