Stamford Police are seeking witnesses to the lunch-time accident on Summer Street that took the life of a city resident.

The Stamford Police Department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is seeking witnesses to the lunch-time accident on Summer Street Monday, that fatally injured a city resident.

According to police, a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe struck the pedestrian as she was in a crosswalk attempting to cross the intersection of Summer and Hoyt streets at  12:42 p.m. July 21.

The Tahoe was operated by 49-year-old Norwalk resident Natalie Gainer, according to police. The vehicle was traveling in the left lane of southbound Summer Street. At the intersection of Hoyt Street, Gainer attempted to complete a left turn. During the execution the vehicle struck a pedestrian within the crosswalk, police said.

The pedestrian, identified as Stamford resident Janice Pielert, 58. was lodged underneath the vehicle and required extraction by Stamford Fire Department personnel. Pielert was brought to the Stamford Hospital Emergency Room and had died from the injuries, police said.

Gainer was transported to the Stamford Hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries. A police statement did not indicate whether Gainer would face any charges.

The investigation is continuing and anyone witnessing this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers — Hugh Mullin or Ryan McAllister at 203-977-4712.
