State Police Identify Victims From Fatal I-95 Crash

A spokesman said Kelly Taborda, 18, and James A. Sorto, 42, of North Bergen, N.J. were killed in Saturday's accident.

State Police have identified the victims of Saturday's fatal accident on I-95 in Darien as Kelly Taborda, 18, and James A. Sorto, 42, of North Bergen, N.J.

Lt. Paul Vance said Taborda was also pregnant at the time of the accident.

Vance said that police haven't definitively confirmed Sorto's identity but are "comfortable that's who it is" and will seek to make a conclusive match with DNA tests.

Taborda was a member of the class of 2011 at North Bergen High School, according to her Facebook profile.

State police said the accident that killed Taborda and Sorto occurred around 6 a.m. Saturday when an intoxicated Yadira Torres, 26, of Bridgeport lost control of the Dodge Caliber she was driving on I-95 north near exit 10.

Torres then struck a tractor-trailer in the center lane, causing it to spin around, overturn, and catch on fire, according to police. Sorto, the truck's driver, was trapped in the fire and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said other motorists were able to pull Taborda from the burning cab but that she was later pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.

The accident , creating major traffic jams on local streets from Greenwich to Darien.

Torres was charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and reckless driving stemming from the accident. She was arraigned Monday at state Superior Court in Stamford.

Her attorney, Darnell D. Crosland, told Judge Robert L. Genuario during the appearance that Torres had been celebrating her 26th birthday when the accident occurred.

A representative of the state bond commissioner’s office who spoke during the arraignment said Torres is a single-parent of four children from ages 2 to 9. She added that Torres had no criminal record and that she is a mental health patient.
