Stop for Broken Tail Light Leads to Pot Charge

A broken tail light leads to a traffic stop which leads to charges of possession of marijuana.

A 25-year-old Norwalk woman was charged with possession of marijuana after her car was stopped by police Saturday for a traffic violation on Tokeneke Road.

Darien police said an officer on patrol noticed that a 2004 Chrysler had a broken tail light. When the car was stopped, the driver appeared nervous, stuttered and began to sweat profusely.

The officer's suspicions were aroused. The woman was told that a police canine would conduct a free air sniff around the vehicle. If the dog indicated an illegal substance was in the car, a search would be made. The woman was asked if she had any illegal substances in the car, and she replied that she had some marijuana.

She gave police officers a small plastic bag containing less than half an ounce of marijuana. Police issued her an infraction ticket.

She got a verbal warning for the tail light.
