19-Year-Old Injured in Brookside Road Crash [Update]

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Update, 8:25 p.m.: 

The father of the driver involved in Saturday's accident contacted Patch to say that his son was not severely injured, contrary to an earlier report from police. He suffered only a broken jaw, the father said.

The 19-year-old driver from Saturday morning's crash is in stable condition, according Darien Police Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, and his injuries are not life-threatening.

Brookside Drive has been reopened following repair work by Connecticut Light & Power.

A Chevrolet Suburban traveling on Brookside Road early Saturday morning severed a utility pole and slammed into a stone wall and several trees, according to , injuring the 19-year-old driver.

The man, a Darien resident, was transported by to Stamford Hospital, where his condition is unknown. He was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time.

Police said the crash, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. near Granaston Lane, was triggered when the vehicle left the roadway traveling northbound, struck the pole, passed through the stone wall, and came to rest against several trees.

The extracted the driver, and the police department's Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene due to the severity of the incident. 

Brookside Road between Granaston Lane and Appletree Road was closed at the scene for processing and reconstruction and will remain blocked off as Connecticut Light and Power installs a replacement utility pole.

Clarification: According to the father of the 19-year-old involved in Saturday's accident, an earlier report from police that the driver was "seriously injured" was inaccurate, as he suffered only a broken jaw.
