Report: Friday's Violent Drinking Party Impacts Turkey Bowl [Update]

Two Darien High School football players have been suspended from playing in Thursday's Turkey Bowl game in connection with a Friday teen drinking party, according to the Darien News, citing unnamed sources.

Update 9:20 p.m.:

According to a newspaper report, Darien Police Detective Mark Cappelli said he does not think the teenager who was arrested on an assault charge Friday, was involved in the vandalism incident related to the Turkey Bowl last Thanksgiving.

The Darien Times reported Cappelli would not comment when asked if another teenager who is under investigation in the recent incident was involved in the vandalism last year.

Just before the with New Canaan on Thanksgiving, two Darien High School football players have been suspended as a result of a Friday night fight at a teenage drinking party, according to a report in the Darien News that cites unnamed sources for its information.

On its website, the newspaper reports that an unnamed source said the victim received "a concussion, a broken bone in his neck, facial lacerations, and had surgery Wednesday repair his broken nose."

Again citing unnamed sources, the newspaper said the suspended players were "one of the star receivers and a defensive lineman," and the suspensions were for alleged presence at a party where alcohol was served to minors.

A news release issued Wednesday afternoon by the Darien Police Department provided a little additional information than police provided earlier in the week. The news release states that the victim of the beating at the Hollow Tree Ridge Road party had gone to the party uninvited, which resulted in the fight.

The victim's injuries were described as "multiple lacerations, a swollen lip and bloody nose. [...] The injuries were of a serious nature, and the victim was transported to Stamford Hospital."

Scott Waters, 18, of 5 Walmsley Rd., was released on $500 bond after his arrest on a charge of second-degree assault. He is to appear Nov. 30 in state Superior Court in Stamford. Police released his arrest photo (attached to this article).

According to the Darien News article, Waters has played for the Darien High School team in the past but this year was listed on the roster of the Canterbury School.

Original article, 11:20 a.m.:

Teenagers were drinking Friday at a party in a house on Hollow Tree Ridge Road when one of them was beaten up, police said.

The 17-year-old victim, a Darien resident, had bruises, a bloody nose, a swolen left eye. Police did not say the boy's injuries were worse than that, although he was transported by a Post 53 ambulance to Stamford Hospital and later released.

Police were called to the scene at 11:40 p.m. on the report that someone was being assaulted. When they arrived, police said, a group of teenagers fled into the nearby woods, leaving behind 57 cans of beer and the set up of a game of beer Pong.

It seemed that most of the teenagers at the party had already left by the time police arrived, said Capt. Frederick Komm, a spokesman for the department.

Police said the victim got into an altercation with others at the party who told him he wasn't wanted there. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim sitting on a stone wall. He initially told police he had fallen on the street.

Police arrested Scott Waters, 18, of 5 Walmsley Rd. on a charge of second-degree assault. A 17-year-old who lived in the home where the party was held was charged with providing alcohol to minors.
