Noroton Heights Transformer Explosion Causes Brief Outage

Some 400 customers were affected, but power was quickly restored.

Update, 1:45 p.m.: That didn't take long. As of 1:45 p.m., CL&P was reporting just Darien 2 customers without power.

Update, 1:40 p.m.: The Darien Library and several other residents are reporting that power has been restored. The library will open slightly late due to the outage.

Original article: A transformer fire and explosion in Noroton Heights early Sunday afternoon has left some 400 customers powerless, according to and CL&P officials.

"Fire crews have put out the fire and CL&P is on scene. Rail traffic has been suspended on some tracks," Darien Police said in a statement.

According to police, the apparent cause was a tree that fell onto power lines in the Moore Street area.

"Many traffic lights are out in town, use caution when driving and make a full stop at at light that is dark," the statement continued.

Several residents reported losing power shortly before 1:00 p.m. CL&P's outage map indicated that 410 customers were without power in Darien as of 1:30 p.m.

The Darien Library, among the affected customers, said it would be closed until power was restored.

"Resist calling the police department or 911 unless you have an emergency," police advised. "Too many curiousity calls flood our call center, hampering operations. It is unknown how long power will be out."
